Grandmaster Duel Stuns Chess World: Petrov Defeats Nakamura in Epic World Championship Decider

Apr 24, 2026, 11:24 AM

In one of the most dramatic finales in chess history, Ivan Petrov of Bulgaria claimed the 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship title on Friday, defeating five-time challenger Hiroshi Nakamura of Japan in a nail-biting tiebreak session that lasted over six hours at the Grand Palais in Vienna, Austria.

The match, which began on April 1st and stretched across fourteen classical games, ended in a 7–7 draw, forcing the first rapid tiebreak decider since the legendary 2016 championship. Petrov, ranked second in the world coming into the match, converted a stunning endgame in the fourth tiebreak game, sacrificing his queen on move 43 to force a pawn promotion that left Nakamura with no defence.

"I have dreamed of this moment since I was six years old playing in Plovdiv," said an emotional Petrov at the post-match press conference. "Hiroshi is a great champion. He pushed me to my absolute limit."

Nakamura, 38, who had held the title since 2023, was gracious in defeat. "Ivan played the match of his life. I have no regrets — it was a battle worthy of the championship."

Petrov, at 27, becomes the youngest world champion since Magnus Carlsen and the first Bulgarian to hold the title. Thousands of fans gathered in Sofia's Alexander Nevsky Square to watch the final moves on giant screens, erupting in celebration as the result was confirmed.

The next World Championship cycle is expected to begin in late 2027.
